The Big Vagina Report 2023 reveals how thousands of women across the UK are scared, ashamed and embarrassed about their vagina and vaginal health

Whether it’s discharge, sexually transmitted infections, or just being more open about sex, a large-scale survey of women across the UK has revealed just how ashamed and embarrassed we are when talking about our vaginas.

Titled The Big Vagina Report 2023, the survey from Balance Activ wanted to discover how women across the country feel and view their vaginas, and where these patterns of behaviour around this very normal, but very taboo subject come from.

The survey revealed that a fifth of women learnt “nothing at all” about female anatomy at school and were taught, from an early age, to hide their experiences and ‘be discreet’ when referencing anything to do with their bodily functions.

This has seemingly carried on into adulthood because 66% of women then said they “rarely or never engage” in conversations about their private parts with 46% admitting they’re not sure if what is happening in their vagina is considered normal or abnormal.

Embarrassed and ashamed

When asked why this is, more than three-quarters said they would be embarrassed about talking their genitals with people they didn’t know well, and what was perhaps more worryingly 39% of women said they would even be embarrassed talking to a health professional about it.

When asked about buying intimate health products – which include sanitary towels and tampons – more than a fifth (21%) admitted to whispering or using a lowered voice in order to get intimate products from behind the counter.

We recently published a series of content centred around the subject of female masturbation and sexual wellness. This includes guides on the best vibrators for women, and how masturbating is good for your skin and hair. We also have an entire guide on how your skin and hair change at each stage of your menstrual cycle.

The inspiration for this series was a report that found that 78% of adults globally touch themselves regularly – including 78% of British women – yet it’s still considered taboo, or shameful.

It’s telling that Google has banned adverts being shown on or around this series of articles because they contain adult content. What’s even more telling, is that we published very similar pages on our sister site, MBman, talking about male sex toys and masturbation and those pages (as of yet) haven’t been restricted.

This all seemingly feeds into the wider belief held by the majority of the women in the Balance Activ survey that their vagina, and everything to do with it, is off-bounds and frowned upon.

Off-limit topics

Women are embarrassed to talk about their vaginasShutterstock

Among the vagina-related topics discussed in the survey, half of the women said they would feel uncomfortable talking about discharge, followed closely by STIs (49%), bacterial vaginosis (BV) (47%) and sex (44%). For the younger generations, the most popular reason cited was fear of judgement.

The fear and embarrassment are so high, the survey found that many of us don’t even refer to our private parts by their real name. Over a quarter of women (26%) have given their vagina a nickname, and 7 in 10 said they would just like to minimise chat about their vagina as much as possible.

Understanding the norm

Discharge and vagina symptom checkerBalance Activ

Elsewhere in the survey, 45% of women said that they have experienced their vagina secreting a discharge they had no idea about how to identify on their own.

Over a fifth (22%) are not confident they know the symptoms of thrush and over 4 in 10 (44%) are not confident they know the symptoms of BV.

“It’s clear there is a lack of education about intimate health from a young age, leading women to feel too embarrassed to even consult a healthcare professional,” said Dr Shazia Malik, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. “It’s really important for women to be able to spot the signs of any changes in the vagina or vulva.”

If you fall into this category and are unsure where to turn, there are online anonymous symptom checkers. This can help you either identify the problem and seek out a treatment, or give you confidence when talking to a pharmacist or GP about any concerns you may have.

Feminine hygiene

Fanny. Flower. Vagina. Whatever you call your private parts, you’ll need the best intimate products to help keep them clean, fresh, and healthy.

From sustainable tampons to menstrual cups, period pants, feminine washes, and more, we’ve handpicked the best intimate products for women.

Before we get started, though, it’s important to establish the differences between your vulva and vagina so that it’s clear what each of the products listed below is used for. Often people use the term, ‘vagina’ when they are technically referring to a ‘vulva,’ for instance.

In short, the term vagina refers to your internal female organs – the muscly tube that leads from your external genitals to your cervix. Your vulva refers to your external genitals.

When it comes to cleaning products, your vagina is a self-cleaning organ, and cleaning it, especially with products that contain too many chemicals, can cause its delicate ecosystem to become unbalanced.

Your vulva needs help to be kept clean and hygienic, but again you don’t need to be scrubbing it or applying strong chemicals. Vulvas and vaginas are meant to have a natural odour to them

Now we’ve cleared that up, here are the best intimate products for women, categorised by type.

♥︎ Period products

Periods. What a bloody pain, excuse the pun. Gone are the days when you had limited options for managing the blood flow, however. Today, there is a range of innovative period products on the market that help make your time of the month easier to deal with. Or, at the least, less annoying.

Menstrual disc

Tampons are great, for what they are, but they can be uncomfortable, damaging to the planet, not to mention dangerous when kept in too long.

A viable, more sustainable alternative is a menstrual disc. Unlike a tampon, a menstrual disc sits slightly past your vaginal canal and collects the blood, rather than absorbs it.

In theory, this means there should be fewer leakages than with a tampon, although putting it in place does require some practice to begin with, especially when it comes to removing it.

Once you get the hang of it, this new period product will help the environment and potentially improve your comfort and lifestyle during your period. You can have sex with a menstrual disc in, for instance. Some can be worn for up to twelve hours and can hold up to five tampons’ worth of blood, all while generating 60% less waste.

Just be aware that, unlike menstrual cups, if you opt for a disposable menstrual disc, you’ll need to throw it away at the end of each day.

Menstrual DiscFlex

mamabella recommends: Flex

Flex is made of a medical-grade polymer and is hypoallergenic, BPA and phthalate-free, with no silicone or latex. You can have sex with this menstrual disc in, and it can be worn for up to twelve hours and will hold up to five tampons’ worth of blood, all while generating 60% less waste.

Price: £40 for a three-month supply on a subscription. A one-off pack of 24 discs costs £45.

Where to buy: Flexfits

Menstrual cup

Menstrual cups have been around for a while now which means there are quite a few to choose from. So which menstrual cup is best? Our favourite is the Saalt menstrual cup because it has multiple seal points, meaning leakages are less likely.

Choosing to use a menstrual cup is a great environmental decision because it reduces wastage massively, as a cup will last for up to ten years. That’s because it’s made from 100% medical-grade silicone, which is chemical and toxin-free. It’s brilliant news for your bank balance too because you’ll be paying £25 to cover ten years, rather than buying period products every month.

If you’ve given birth vaginally and/or have a heavy flow then go for the ‘regular’ cup. A regular cup is the equivalent of four tampons, so you should be able to wear the cup for the whole day without having to worry about emptying it.

Saalt Menstrual CupSaalt

mamabella recommends: Saalt

The Saalt Cup is made of 100% medical-grade silicone, which is chemical and toxin-free. A regular cup is the equivalent of four tampons, so you should be able to wear the cup for the whole day without having to worry about emptying it.

Price: £25 for ten years!

Where to buy: Saalt.co.uk

Period underwear

Period knickers are a great option to reduce waste – because they’re reusable – while also helping you to save money in the long run. This is because you only need to buy them once and you can wash and wear.

We particularly like the range of period pants from Wuka. It offers a range of different-shaped underwear for light flow, medium flow, and heavy flow. This means that no matter how heavy your periods are, you’re covered. They even offer a lace option, so you can feel glam.

Period pants work by soaking up your blood, keeping it away from your skin, without the need for any other feminine product. The fabric is made up of thousands of small filaments that trap the liquid and stop it from leaking onto your clothes.

In addition to period pants, which Wuka is famous for, the brand also now offers zero-waste, carbon-neutral pants for the rest of the month when you’re not on your period.

WUKA sustainable period pants underwearWuka

mamabella recommends: Wuka

Wuka offers a range of different-shaped underwear for light flow, medium flow, and heavy flow. In addition to period pants, which Wuka is famous for, the brand also now offers zero-waste, carbon-neutral pants for the rest of the month when you’re not on your period.

Price: From £12

Where to buy: Wuka

Sustainable tampons

For all the stick we’ve just given tampons, they’re convenient and suit many women. If this is you, but you hate the fact they can be wasteful then these sustainable tampons from Dame are a great middle-ground.

They’re much more ethical than other tampon brands and are made from organic cotton, which is also pH-balanced and hypoallergenic meaning they’re kind to your vagina.

Unlike most conventional tampons in the shops, these tampons are chemical-free and don’t have any plastic, making them fully biodegradable.

You can get a starter pack, a whole year’s supply, or you can buy these tampons on subscription. There’s also a choice of absorbency from, ‘regular’ to, ‘super’ and ‘super plus.’

Dame tamponDame

mamabella recommends: Dame

Dame tampons are made from organic cotton, are pH balanced, and hypoallergenic. Unlike most conventional tampons in the shops, these tampons are chemical-free and don’t have any plastic, making them fully biodegradable.

Price: From £8.79 for 34 tampons

Where to buy: Dame

Environmentally friendly period pads

The period industry is a huge contributor of waste – 3 billion menstrual products are used each year in the UK, generating 200,000 tonnes of waste. Conventional disposable menstrual products are made from 90% plastic, and plastic products take up to a thousand years to decompose.

But it’s not only plastic wastage that’s a problem with single-use period products. The chemicals in them are also terrible for the planet.

If period pads, or sanitary towels – depending on what they’re called where you live – suit you best, then you can opt for pads made from 100% organic cotton.

They’re totally biodegradable, which includes the packaging and the wrapper, and our favourite from Grace and Green are also vegan. An ideal choice if you want to wear period pads but also protect our planet.

Alternatively, there are now flushable period pads from a company called Fluus. Founded by a doctor and engineer duo – Dr. Olivia Ahn and Aaron Koshy – the Fluus pads use a patent-pending, flushable, and microplastic-free technology called Flushtec. This allows the Fluus pads to be flushed down the toilet where they will break down just like toilet paper.

Grace and Green padsGrace and Green

mamabella recommends: Grace and Green

Grace and Green sanitary pads are totally biodegradable, including the packaging and the wrapper. They’re also vegan-friendly and are made from 100% organic cotton. This is why they’re slightly more expensive than regular pads, but we think it’s worth it.

Price: £5 for a pack of £10

Where to buy: Grace and Green

Fluus flushable period pads and sanitary towelsFluus

mamabella recommends: Fluus flushable period pads

Fluus period pads are made from plant fibres, biopolymers, and tree sap meaning they don’t use any microplastics and create zero period pollution permanent waste. What’s more, you can flush them down the toilet and they break down like toilet paper.

Price: £5 for 15 pads, with a monthly subscription service available. Fluus is also currently offering a free trial.

Where to buy: Fluus

♥︎ Tampon and pad disposal

Many of us have likely been in loos where there’s an over-flowing tampon bin you definitely don’t want to touch, or at a friend’s house where they don’t have a bin in the bathroom.  It’s a problem that the people at fablittlebag.com are attempting to solve with a discreet disposable bag for your tampons and pads.

This means you can get rid of them in a clean, more environmentally friendly way, without having to rely on the toilet facilities. They’re easy to carry around in your handbag until you need them and once used they are fully sealable, so you can keep hold of it easily without spillage until you find a bin.

Getting rid of blood stains

Save My Knickers how to get blood stains outSave My Knickers

Sometimes your period shows up unexpectedly, or your menstrual product leaks leaving marks on your underwear. These can be hard to get rid of, but now you can buy a powder that’s specifically designed to remove blood from fabrics, particularly your knickers or bed linen.

This means you can wear your nice, pretty knickers and not your granny pants when you’re on your period, without fear of spoiling them.

It also means the days of leaving your knickers to soak in the sink are over!

The cleaning powder is called Save My Knickers (£14.99), and as well as removing blood stains, it works a treat on baby clothes that have faced a poonami.

To be fair, with this level of stain-removing power, this product could be used on all sorts of laundry. A really helpful thing to have in your cupboard!

♥︎ Intimate cleansing

Your menstrual cycle can affect how fresh you feel downstairs. Your vaginal odour and comfort can change, depending on your time of the month and hormones, and when it comes to intimate washes it’s vital you choose a cleanser that doesn’t interfere with your natural pH levels.

The pH balance refers to how acidic or alkaline a substance is. Having a pH of 0 means something is highly acidic, while a pH of 14 is alkaline, or non-acidic). The normal pH balance of your vagina is between 3.8 and 4.5 on the pH scale which makes it on the acidic side.

Therefore you’re ideally looking for products with a pH level somewhere between 4.5 and 7 – anything higher and you’re moving into alkaline territory and this can wreak havoc.

Of course, simply using warm water will do the job (try to avoid soaps as they can dry out the area) but if you want something more specific, there are some great feminine washes. Here are our top picks.

Mio Balance Act Intimate CleanserMio Skincare

mamabella recommends: Mio Balance Act Intimate Cleanser

Shea butter help lock in this moisture and Aloe Vera helps to soothe, cool, and hydrate the area. The fragrance is completely natural, so it shouldn’t irritate. Price: £15

Where to buy: Mio Skincare

The Honey Pot Intimate WashThe Honey Pot

The Honey Pot Sensitive Foaming Wash

WooWoo Intimate WipesWooWoo

WooWoo Feminine Wipes

Sometimes you want to quickly freshen up. These feminine wipes from WooWoo are perfect for the job. Not only are they pH balanced, which is a must when it comes to cleaning your vulva, but they are also biodegradable, meaning you can flush them down the loo, making them really easy to use. You can also use these wipes to clean your vibrator. They’re vegan and cruelty-free, plus they’re plastic-free.

Price: £3.75 for a pack of 20

Where to buy: Lookfantastic

♥︎ Lube

Sex can cause havoc with the delicate balance in and around your vagina and vulva. If everyone practices safe sex and keeps themselves hygienic then the changes are minimal, however, there are many variables that come into play (excuse the pun) from both foreplay and penetration that can cause an imbalance.

One of them is the use of lubricant – either on condoms themselves, or additional lube that’s added into the mix.

Your best bet when looking to avoid lube and any chemicals from interfering with your vaginal balance is to use products that are water-based. This isn’t a guarantee, but given water has a neutral pH – meaning it sits square in the middle of the pH scale and is neither acidic nor alkaline – there is less chance of it causing any problems.

Water-based lube can also work wonders for vaginal dryness experienced at any stage of your life, but particularly during menopause.

The YESYES Company water-based lubeThe YESYES Company

mamabella recommends: YES WB Lube

As a pH-balanced, water-based lube, the YES WB Lube from The YES YES company is a fantastic and gentle way to increase dryness, or for use during sex or masturbation. This product is organic and contains Aloe Vera to keep things calm and less irritated. You can also buy an oil-based version, and one formulated specifically for anal.

Price: £11.99

Where to buy: The YES YES Company

We’ve also rounded up what we consider to be the best lube options over on our sister site, MBman.

The benefits of masturbating: We explain the masturbation effects on the brain and how it helps fight signs of ageing and acne https://www.mamabella.uk/what-is-masturbation-effects-brain-health-benefits-good-for/ Wed, 09 Nov 2022 11:00:55 +0000 https://mamabella.uk/?p=7608 Here we explain more about masturbation effects on the brain, the benefits of masturbation, and why it's time to stop being so ashamed about doing it

The post The benefits of masturbating: We explain the masturbation effects on the brain and how it helps fight signs of ageing and acne appeared first on mamabella.

]]>
According to a global report on self-pleasure, 78% of adults across the world enjoy masturbating. Of that number, more than three-quarters of British women take part in masturbation on a regular basis.

Beyond just pure pleasure, masturbating has a whole host of health benefits. It can even help improve your skin.

Here we explain more about masturbation effects on the brain, the benefits of masturbation, and why it’s time to stop being so ashamed about doing it.

What is masturbation?

Before we dive into the benefits of masturbating, we don’t want to make any assumptions. There are more than 3,500 Google searches every month with people asking what masturbation actually is so if you’re unsure, let us help.

It’s such a common question, the NHS has an official definition:

“Masturbation is when you get sexual pleasure from touching your genitals, usually with your hand. You can masturbate yourself or a partner. Masturbation usually leads to an orgasm.

“Generally, men and boys masturbate by rubbing or moving their hand up and down their erect penis. Women and girls may use their fingers or hand to rub the area around their clitoris or vagina.

“Many people enjoy masturbating with their partner as part of healthy sex life and there’s no right or wrong way to masturbate.”

As that last sentence explains, there is no right or wrong way to masturbate. It’s all about exploring your body and discovering how you like to be touched, what you enjoy, and what’s the best way to reach climax. This is both a great way of being more comfortable with your own body and needs, but it can also help your partner better satisfy you during sex, for instance.

The only times it can border on dangerous or damaging is if you think that masturbating is taking over your life, as in it stops you from getting on with everyday activities like work or spending time with family etc., or if you masturbate in dangerous or illegal situations.

Despite the high numbers of people in the report who said they masturbate globally – other stats include 96% of British men, 93% of German men, and 92% of American men; 76% of German women, and 76 % of American women –there is still a lot of stigma and taboo about masturbating, and sex generally.

It can be considered crude to discuss sexual matters openly with friends, loved ones, and even our partners even though a very high majority of us engage in it regularly. Yet having a fulfilling sex life – whether with someone else or yourself – can have a host of health benefits.

So much so, vibrators have been widely attributed as being invented to help alleviate depression and anxiety in women – a medical condition that was collectively known as hysteria.

BENEFITS OF MASTURBATION

Research has shown the benefits of masturbating include:

  • Reducing stress
  • Releasing tension
  • Helping with headaches
  • Helping you sleep better
  • Helping relieve menstrual cramps
  • Improve skin
  • Improving self-esteem
  • Helping treat sexual problems
  • Strengthening muscle tone in your pelvic or anal areas

“Hysteria was treated by vulval or clitoral massage and later vibration, which would bring women ‘to the point of hysterical paroxysms of relief,'” according to sexologist Dr. Carol Queen, curator of the Good Vibrations Antique Vibrator Museum.

In the early 1900s, they were being marketed more widely to consumers and you could even buy them from everyday homeware catalogues.

This is because of the number of masturbation effects on the brain. When you orgasm, your brain releases endorphins. These are hormones that block pain and make you feel good. They’re also released when you exercise when you eat certain foods.

These are released whether you orgasm from masturbating or during sex. They’re such a powerful mood enhancer and pain reliever that they’re likened to opioid drugs.

The power of masturbating to improve your skin is of particular interest to us, as beauty fans.

You’ll likely recognise that post-sex glow, and masturbating can create a similar glow.

By helping to reduce stress and tension, sex and masturbating help combat inflammation. This is a major cause of acne, wrinkles, fine lines, and much more.

In fact, studies have shown that the masturbation effects on the brain are actually enhanced, when compared to sex, because people tend to be more relaxed as they masturbate.

Many also factor masturbating into their routine, which helps boost the overall wellbeing effects.

Choosing the best vibrator for women can be a minefield. From bullet, to suction, rabbit, remote-controlled and more, we’ve handpicked our favourites below

Talking about sex and masturbating is still a largely taboo subject yet a global report on self-pleasure has found that 78% of adults globally touch themselves regularly – including 78% of British women – so finding the best vibrator for women may be a more pressing need than many may assume.

There are myriad benefits of having an orgasm, whether it’s achieved from sexual intercourse or masturbating, and this includes better sleep, better relationships, and better skin. You can read more about this in our guide to What is masturbation and why is it so good for you and your skin? guide.

There are almost countless vibrator sex toys to choose from, though, and that’s before you even factor in dildos. So we wanted to break down some of the taboos surrounding this subject from what you may want to consider, to whether a bullet, suction, rabbit, remote-controlled or another type of vibrator will best suit you.

We also want to point out that only because we discuss vibrators in the scope of masturbating, that’s not to say these can only be used for self-pleasure. If you and your partner are willing, sex toys can be a great addition to sex.

Best vibrator for women

Now you’re armed with knowledge about multiple types of vibrators, you’ll likely have a better idea of which one(s) you want to try. For the past three months, we’ve been putting a selection of sex toys to the test to help you narrow down these choices.

With all of these toys, we recommend you clean them properly after every use. This is to avoid bacteria forming on them, which could result in thrush or a nasty infection. The Adults Toy Shop sells the Loving Joy Toy cleaner and it’s only £3.99. Alternatively, use a gentle soap or baby shampoo. Many of these vibrators are waterproof.

1. Editor’s Pick: Alive Midnight Quiver Suction Vibrator

£54.99 | Buy now

Why we love it: This top entry in our list of the best vibrator for women may seem a little pricey but it comes with a whole load of features, making it much better value than others in this list. Not only does it act as a regular clitoral vibrator, with 10 vibration levels to choose from, it also has a suction feature.

Place the soft silicone head on your clitoris and the Alive Midnight Quiver will use suction to stimulate it to orgasm. If you’ve never tried a suction vibrator before (we hadn’t before we used this) it’s a game-changer. We don’t need a partner anymore! (This is an exaggeration but it’s a close second…)

There are 10 suction levels to choose from and we recommend you make your clitoris wet to enhance the experience. It can take a little bit of manoeuvering but once you catch it right, you’ll know – immediately. It’s a fantastic alternative to the vibrators we’re used to and creates a completely different sensation. A very welcomed one.

What’s more, it’s waterproof, meaning you can effectively clean the head and shaft after each use, and its rechargeable via USB. No hunting around for batteries! The one downside is that it’s quite noisy, and when it’s in suction mode, this noise can sound a little odd so it may not be one for when you’re trying to be discreet…

2. Bargain Buy: Gaia Biodegradable Eco Bullet Vibrator Blue

£6.99 | Buy now

Why we love it: There is so much to love about this bullet vibrator. For something so small, it’s incredibly mighty. It only comes with one speed, controlled via a one-touch button on the top, but this makes using it incredibly simple. Don’t be put off by this lack of variety, either. It’s very powerful and can get you to orgasm in less than a minute if you’re in the mood and you get the position just right.

It’s made from a starch-based bioplastic called Biofeel, which means the Gaia Eco Bullet is the world’s first biodegradable and recyclable vibrator. It’s also tiny, so you can fit it in your handbag, discreetly take it on holidays or weekends away, and if anyone happens across it (like, heaven forbid, your kids) it’s not immediately obvious what it is.

We’ve had a lot of fun with this, which is why it’s our Budget Buy in our list of the best vibrators for women. It’s also great for more precise anal and nipple stimulation, and we’d happily pay a lot more than £6.99 for it.

It takes a single AAA battery, which isn’t included, but the battery lasts a while. We’ve replaced it once in three months and we use it once or twice a week. You can tell when it needs replacing because the power will drop and you may take longer to reach orgasm.

Buy now from The Adults Toy Shop

3. Luxury Buy: Svakom Ella Vibrating Egg

£99.99 | Buy now

Why we love it: Yes, £100 for a vibrator is a lot of money but the Svakom Ella Egg really is the best vibrator for women with smart features, which is great for solo play or when you’re in a couple/threesome or so on.

Whether you’re using it alone, with someone else (or multiple other people) you can control the 10 different intensities through an app, via the egg itself, or via the retrieval cord (which is fused to the egg meaning you can’t pull it off by accident!).

It’s powerful enough to use on your clitoris but is designed for vaginal stimulation, and is so quiet you can even wear it out to dinner, or similar – allowing your partner to control it, and your orgasm, remotely.

Made from soft, body-safe silicone with a ribbed texture to increase internal stimulation, the Ella Egg can be inserted and “worn” all day. And when it’s time to up the ante, you can switch to Climax Mode.

We recommend you use a water-based lubricant – we recommend Loving Joy again – to make the Ella Egg more comfortable to use. You’ll also find this enhances the sensation.

Plus, it’s charged via USB so you don’t have to take batteries with you.

Buy now from The Adults Toy Shop

4. Best G-spot vibrator for women: Slim G-Spot Vibrator

£12.99 | Buy now

Why we love it: If you’ve never used a G-spot vibrator before, this is a great place to start.

Many G-spot vibrators tend to cater to both vaginal and clitoral stimulation. This means they’re shaped like the letter C (in order to hit both spots), but this can be tricky to get into position and can feel uncomfortable if you don’t get the angles quite right.

The Slim G-Spot Vibrator is, instead, purely for vaginal stimulation and has a slim shaft and small, soft, curved head, making it super comfortable to use, and familiarise yourself with.

It comes with a range of intensities and vibration types and you can control these while the vibrator is inside, by twisting the base. The base is long enough to make this easier than it sounds.

You can, of course, use this vibrator on your clitoris but it’s not as effective as some of the others in this list – namely the Eco Bullet. It’s certainly powerful enough to get you aroused which then makes your G-spot swell and makes it easier to locate once the vibrator is inserted.

It takes two AAA batteries which aren’t included.

Buy now from The Adults Toy Shop

5. Best rabbit vibrator for women: Fifty Shades of Grey Greedy Girl Bullet Rabbit Vibrator

£39.99 | Buy now

Why we love it: Chances are if you’ve ever seen, or used, a Rampant Rabbit or similar rabbit-shaped vibrator, you’ll know that they’re far from discreet…they tend to be large and the rabbit ears are typically part of an attachment on a large vibrator or dildo.

The Greedy Girl Bullet Rabbit Vibrator combines all the pleasure of the bunny ears (the sensation is similar to that of a tongue in terms of pressure and softness) but in a bullet form. It’s a little more obviously a vibrator if someone was to find it, compared to the Eco Bullet, but it’s still discreet enough to store away in a draw or bag.

There’s even a travel lock feature so it doesn’t actually start vibrating in your handbag or suitcase, giving the game away.

There are three-speed settings, and seven vibration patterns. Plus this bullet vibrator is rechargeable via USB. This is part of the reason why it costs so much more than the Eco Bullet but performs just as admirably

6. Best vibrator set: 3-Piece Sleek Tapered Bullet Vibrator Set

£32 | Buy now

3 Piece Sleek Tapered Bullet Vibrator SetNasty Gal

If you want to get more bang for your buck – or orgasms for your money – then we recommend buying a vibrator set like the 3-piece Sleek Tapered Bullet Vibrator Set from Nasty Gal.

As its name suggests, there are three different-sized bullet vibrators in this pack. This includes a small, metallic bullet which is great for precise clitoral stimulation.

Next up is a classic bullet vibrator with a streamlined shaft and matte finish.

Finally, the third bullet is the largest of the lot – making it better suited for internal as well as external use. This bullet has a curved tip to help you target the G-spot.

You can use them all solo, or mix it up and use one on yourself and another on your partner during sex. The possibility for pleasure is endless.

We recently tested a host of the best vibrators for women and in the process we realised just how many different types there really are. From bullet vibrators to rabbits, massage wands, and clitoral stimulators, there is a whole world of pleasure out there that we had seemingly been missing out on!

If you’re like us and were oblivious to just how many options there are, or you’re curious to know more about how each type works, we’ve put together this Vibrators 101 guide. It not only reveals the different types of vibrators but also gives tips on how to use each one to get the maximum effect.

We’ll be updating this page as we come across (excuse the pun) more options and if you have any recommendations or favourites, then please let us know!

Vibrators 101: Different types and how to use them

As the name suggests, a vibrator, well, vibrates. But it’s more than that.

Vibrators use weights attached to a motor to give vibrators more “wobble’ and movement to stimulate the clitoris (or any G-spots really, depending on the size and shape of the toy). This stimulation causes blood to flow to the area, enhancing its sensitivity, while also causing it to swell.

These things combine to create a pleasurable experience that leads to orgasm – or two, three, or more, depending on how much time you have! The beauty of being a woman.

The effect varies, though, based on which type of vibrator you choose and your own personal sexual preferences. “Sex toys can be broken down into three categories: internal stimulation, external joy or both,” according to Roy Johnson, founder of The Adults Toy Shop. So you need to ask yourself: how do you enjoy being aroused, or more specifically, which category gives you the best orgasm.

The main vibrator types within these categories are as follows:

Bullet vibrators and clitoral stimulators

What:? As their name suggests, bullet vibrators are shaped like bullets. They deliver simple, effective – and typically strong – vibrations for specific areas. This will likely be your clitoris, but bullet vibrators can be used during sex as well as solo on various body parts.

gaia-biodegradable-eco-bullet-vibrator-blue-2The Adults Toy Shop

By comparison, clitoral vibrators are designed to cater specifically to clitoral stimulations. Technically any vibrator has the ability to stimulate your clitoris – the beauty of it being on the outside and easily accessible – and bullets are a favourite among many women, but you can also buy vibrators that focus purely on the clit that come in a range of shapes and sizes.

Who:? “Bullets are great starter vibrators,” continues Johnson.  “They’re small, discreet, and easy to try.” This is because they usually have just a single setting powered by a single button.

Bullet vibrators are also the most afforable way to buy a sex toy, making them best suited to people on a budget. One of our recommended bullets – the Gaia Biodegradable Eco Bullet Vibrator – comes in at just £6.99 while also being good for the environment.

How to use a bullet vibrator: Press the bullet vibrator against your clitoris or clitoral hood and either hold it still or move it round in circles or back and forth to increase blood flow to the area. Most women have certain areas of their clitoris that are more sensitive than others and these different movements will help you find where yours is. The amount of pressure and movement speed will depend on what you prefer. The same methods can used for clitoral stimulators. Clitoral stimulators can sometimes feature pointier ends to increase the precision and

While these small, discreet toys should only be used externally (they can easily become stuck internally so we don’t recommend you try it…!) the clitoris isn’t the only place they bring pleasure. They can be used to stimulate the nipples, or placed at the base of the penis to enhance sensitivity. In fact, the possibilities are endless.

mamabella recommends: Gaia Biodegradable Eco Bullet Vibrator (£6.99); Ann Summers 3 Speed Bullet Vibrator (£12); Power Bullet Set (£28) – this features a standard bullet as well as four covers designed to create different sensations

Rabbit vibrators

What:? Ann Summers is renowned for its Rampant Rabbit sex toy and these vibrators get their name from the fact they have two heads – one designed for penetration and the other for stimulating your clitoris. This smaller head typically looks like a rabbit, complete with rabbit ears. The rabbit ear design helps mimic the movement and texture of a tongue, which is typically softer and gentler than a finger or penis.

Fifty Shades of Grey greedy girl bullet rabbit vibratorThe Adults Toy Shop

“Rabbit vibrators are one of those essential sex toys that everyone should own, at least try!” explains Johnson. They’re particularly great for blended orgasms, which is when you stimulate both your inner and outer G-spots at the same time to achieve a more intense dual climax.

Who:? Rabbit vibrators are far from discreet but this also means they’re powerful. If you like experimenting or you’ve struggled in the past to orgasm from smaller, single stimulation toys then the Rabbit can increase the chances. You can also buy “just the ears” as vibrating cock rings that are worn during sex to stimulate you both.

How to use a rabbit vibrator: It’s worth getting use to the different settings and intensities of your rabbit by placing it on other parts of your body first. This will also help you understand how the toy works and which of the vibrations you like, or don’t like.

We like to use the vibrator on our clitoris first to get us more in the mood and get the blood flowing to the area. This makes the whole region swell and should make the shaft easier to insert. Find somewhere comfortable to sit or lie down and gently explore.

A majority of women struggle to orgasm from penetration so don’t be disheartened if it doesn’t work as well as you hoped the first time, rabbits take a little practice but it’s worth it.

mamabella recommends: Fifty Shades of Grey Greedy Girl Bullet Rabbit Vibrator (£39.99); Ann Summers Self-Love Rabbit (£38)

Wand vibrators

What?: “Wand vibrators are elite-level toys. You get what you pay for and the brand Doxy rules the roost here having made what’s been described as the “most powerful wand” on the market.

Wands are common in porn and, if you’ve ever watched Sex and the City, you’ll recognise it. They have a longer handle and a broader head making them more versatile for different body parts (nipples, feet, whatever you’re into), as well as harder-to-reach places.

Moregasm Wand Ann SummersAnn Summers

This increased size and design allows for deeper vibrations that stimulate through the outer clitoris into the internal structure. This gives a next-level, intense orgasm but they’re also great as massage tools – either on their own, or as part of foreplay.

Who?: Due to their price, wand vibrators are typically for those looking for a premium sex toy and who can afford the extra money. This also makes them a great gift for a special occasion. If you’re well-versed in smaller vibrators like bullets and clitoral stimulators and want to enhance your experience, the wand vibrator is your best bet. Their weight and size do make them less suited for people with mobility problems or limited strength.

How to use a wand vibrator: Just like with the rabbit vibrator, it’s worth familiarising yourself with a wand vibrator so you can determine both how to use it, but what the different sensations feel like. The extra size and weight can cause more friction and while this can be great for pleasure and orgasm power, it can also cause the areas its being used to become a little sore.

To get around this, we recommend wiping a water-based lubricant over the head. If you find the lowest setting to be too intense at first, you can also try using the wand through your underwear.

mamabella recommends: LELO Smart Wand 2 Large Deep Rose (£169.99); Moregasm+ Wand (£80)

Suction vibrators

What?: Suction vibrators are one of the more recent technological advances in the sex toy space and they have special designs that mimic the feeling of suction on your clitoris, nipples or anywhere else that takes your fancy.

alive midnight quiver best suction vibrator for womenThe Adults Toy Shop

If you’ve ever used a lip plumping device, it is a similar sensation. Many suction vibrators also double up as traditional vibrators as well, on the other end. “We’ve seen huge growth in sales for suction vibrators as word spreads on how great they feel,” explains Johnson. They’re normally small and discreet too.

Note: You can also get dildos with suction cups on their base. These are very different things!

How to use a suction vibrator: “Suction vibrators work best with a drop or two of lube so that it mimics the suction of a partner’s mouth and tongue,” continues Johnson. They’re designed for use on the clitoris. Airwave pressure technology helps suck the clitoris and clitoral hood inside, where they are met with vibrations.

It can take a little bit of moving the toy around to find where you get the most pleasure and sensitivity.

As you’re finding your way, we recommend setting your suction vibrator to pulse and then holding the toy still. As you get used to it, you can experiment more with different movements and settings.

mamabella recommends: Loving Joy 10 Function Clitoral Suction Vibrator Black (£19.99); Alive Midnight Quiver Suction Vibrator (£54.99); Womanizer Premium 2 Suction Clit Stim (£170)

G-spot vibrators

What?: Women, as a rule, rarely orgasm from penetration. Or certainly not penetration alone. There are, of course, exceptions, but it takes the right angles, length, and thrust to hit the G-spot (or Grafenberg spot) inside the vagina.

https://www.theadultstoyshop.com/product/gaia-biodegradable-eco-g-spot-vibrator-coral/The Adults Toy Shop

It’s located about an inch or so inside the opening, on the upper vaginal wall, and becomes sensitive and swells during arousal. These G-spot vibrators are curved and angled in such a way to hit this spot. Some also hit the clitoris as well.  It still takes some practice but once you know more about the angles needed, it can help during masturbation as well as sex.

Many rabbit vibrators are also G-spot vibrators because of the curved end of their shaft. However, G-spot vibrators can range from shafts with angled tips to almost circular designs that you can rock back and forth on.

Who?: “G-spot vibrators are perfect if you’re internally stimulated,” says Johnson. “They normally have a larger focus area, designed specifically to bring joy to your G-spot.” If you struggle to orgasm from penetration, G-spot vibrators can be used to experiment and learn more about where your spot is and how you like it to be stimulated.

How to use a G-Spot vibrator: A G-spot toy is probably the vibrator that requires the most practice and experimentation. This effort does pay off though, especially if you can get one that also stimulates the clitoris and can achieve a blended orgasm. After applying a water-based lubricant to the entire toy, place it inside with the curved tip facing upwards.

You can then move it up and down, and in circles to uncover your erogenous zones. You can also use it to mimic the thrusting movement of a penis if you orgasm better from the G-spot being hit with rhythm rather than being massaged.

mamabella recommends: Ann Summers Glitter G-spot vibrator (£15); Ann Summers Sensual G-spot vibrator (£12); Gaia Biodegradable Eco G-Spot Vibrator (£18.99)

Cult Beauty has teamed up with The Lady Garden Foundation to raise money for cancer charities through the sale of sex toys and tech as part of its #VULVALUTION.

The partnership began in September to mark Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month and it’s a campaign that is close to our hearts at mamabella having previously lost loved ones to both cervical and ovarian cancer.

The Lady Garden Foundation is a global charity funding essential research into cancers that affect women – namely ovarian, vulval, vaginal, cervical and womb cancers.

It was founded in 2014 to help fund advances in the treatment of these cancers at The Royal Marsden NHS Trust, and each of The Lady Garden’s eight founders have been touched by these cancers in some way.

Cult Beauty recently launched its Sexual Pleasure and Wellness category – where you can buy vibrators and other sex tech, supplements, feminine hygiene products, lube and more – and as part of its first official charity partnership, it is donating 10% from the sales of products on these pages to The Lady Garden charity.

In particular, it will donate 10% of the profits from sales of its edit of supplements, cleansers and tech to The Lady Garden Foundation.

“The five gynaecological cancers (ovarian, vulval, vaginal, cervical and womb) are sometimes referred to as the ‘Silent Killers’ because there is relatively low awareness of early symptom signs,” said Jenny Halpern Prince, chairperson of The Lady Garden Foundation.

“Often by the time a diagnosis is made, the cancer can be advanced and therefore, the chances of survival are far lower. With an average mortality rate of 44%, understanding the symptoms of will save so many women’s lives.”

Ovarian cancer, as an example, is the sixth most common women’s cancer and the UK has one of the highest incidences of ovarian cancer in Europe.

Below we’ve listed a number of products from Cult Beauty’s Sexual Pleasure and Wellness edit if you’re keen on supporting the charity. Or you can support it directly via The Lady Garden website.
