We’ve put some of the best Aldi beauty alternatives to the test to see if its Lacura range can live up to the likes of Benefit, Bobbi Brown, Pixi, L’Oreal Paris and more

Aldi not only offers great savings on groceries but it’s becoming renowned for its beauty bargains that are almost identical to some of the best-loved and cult products from the likes of Bobbi Brown, Benefit, Pixi and more.

In many cases, the Aldi beauty alternatives look so similar to the original products that we wonder how they can get away with it…(if you don’t know about the Aldi vs M&S caterpillar cake copyright debacle it’s worth checking out. Purely for the memes.)

Yet just because they *look* the same, doesn’t mean they work and perform in the same way. So we decided to put some of these alternatives to the test! Keep scrolling to see our favourite Aldi products and the icons that they can replace.

We’ve also started listing a whole host of other makeup alternatives for Charlotte Tilbury, Huda Beauty and more here. You can also grab a makeup and skincare bargain on our best cheap beauty advent calendars page

Best Aldi Alternatives 2022

Below are the best Aldi alternatives we’ve managed to get hold of. Some are available online, but some are only available in stores and we’ve highlighted these in our list.

If you’re a fan of makeup bargains, check out our best makeup alternatives, and our best skincare alternatives guides for even more recommendations.

♥︎ NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer

Save £21.01

Aldia alternative for NARS concealermamabella | mamabella

THE ICON: The NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer (£25) concealer is one of the most hydrating and radiant concealers we’ve ever used. It has a great formula that glides on smoothly and which offers medium-to-high coverage. It doesn’t leave your skin looking cakey either.

THE ALDI ALTERNATIVE: Aldi’s Lacura Radiant Concealer (£3.99) not only has a near-on identical creamy consistency to the NARS version but it also offers medium-to-high coverage that hides blemishes and under-eye dark circles with ease. Sadly it’s only available in five shades but we love the natural matte finish it gives us.

♥︎ Pixi Glow Tonic vs Lacura Healthy Glow Tonic

Save £15.01

Pixi GLow Tonic cheap alternative from Aldi Lacuramamabella | mamabella

THE ICON: The Pixi Glow Tonic (£18) contains 5% glycolic acid to gently remove dead skin to reveal healthy glowing skin. It’s revered by makeup artists, skincare experts and influencers alike for helping to clear and brighten the skin.

THE ALDI ALTERNATIVE: Lacura Healthy Glow Glycolic Toner (£2.99) also contains 5% glycolic acid and removes dead skin. The packaging is only slightly different, yet the smell and texture are just like Pixi’s icon.

♥︎ Bobbi Brown Face Base vs Lacura Vitabase Primer

Save £42.51 (in-store only)

Bobbi Brown Face Base cheap alternative from Aldimamabella | mamabella

THE ICON: The iconic Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base (£48.50) is a favourite among Bobbi Brown fans because it leaves the skin hydrated and smooth and is the perfect base for your makeup routine. This Face Base can be used as a moisturiser or a primer. It contains shea butter to help keep skin hydrated, with the help of Vitamin B, C and E. All with a fresh, zesty orange scent.

THE ALDI ALTERNATIVE: This is the most impressive of the Aldi beauty products we’ve tried. The Lacura Vitabase Primer (£5.99) is a staggering £42 cheaper than the Bobbi Brown version while offering so many of the same ingredients and benefits. It contains shea butter, Vitamin B, C and E and it works just as well as a moisturiser, and primer. Sadly, it’s not possible to buy the Vitabase primer online from Aldi, however, we have found it on eBay. The downside is that it costs three times as much when bought from here, so it depends on how desperate you are to try it. (Plus £15 is still a lot cheaper than £48.50 for Bobbi Brown’s version!)

♥︎ L’Oreal Paris Revitalift vs Lacura Rejuvelate

Save £9.50

Loreal Paris Revitalift cheap alternative from Aldi Lacuramamabella | mamabella

THE ICON: The L’Oreal Paris Revitalift Day Cream (£12.99) is one of the best anti-ageing creams on the high street. For just £13, you get an anti-wrinkle cream that helps smooth out the skin’s surface. It keeps the skin feeling firm and the added SPF 30 is a bonus that can help the appearance of wrinkles and age spots over time by protecting you from sun damage.

THE ALDI ALTERNATIVE: £13 is already a decent price to pay for smoother, younger-looking skin yet Aldi has outdone L’Oreal Paris with its Lacura Rejuvelate Day Cream (£3.49). It continues SPF30, it helps give the feeling of hydration to the skin. It reduces visible signs of ageing and it’s left our skin feeling smooth and firm.

♥︎ Laura Mercier Setting Powder vs Lacura Loose Setting Powder

Save £25.01 (in-store only)

Laura Mercier Setting Powder cheap alternative from Lacuramamabella | mamabella

THE ICON: Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder (£30) is a favourite among many makeup lovers. It gives a lovely silky finish to the skin, and, being translucent means it suits all skin tones. We particularly like using this to set the concealer around our eyes because it prevents creasing and leaves a smooth matte look on the skin, without making it look dull.

THE ALDI ALTERNATIVE: The Lacura Loose Setting Powder (£4.99) is another in-store only purchase and this is likely because Aldi expects it to be hugely popular, so it wants to get people shopping in the stores in the hope they’ll buy other things too! It comes in two shades: Light/Medium and Medium/Dark and is a lightweight powder, just like Laura Mercier’s, that helps blur fine lines and sets makeup with the same matte finish.

♥︎ Benefit They’re Real vs Lacura Too Legit

Save £17.51

Benefit Theyre Real mascara cheap alternative Aldi Lacuramamabella | mamabella

THE ICON: We love Benefit mascaras. The range has something for every lash type and look but one of our favourites is the Benefit They’re Real! Mascara (£23.50). It gives lashes a bolder and more fluttery look by lengthening curls to add fullness and volume.

THE ALDI ALTERNATIVE: The Lacura Too Legit Mascara (£5.99) gives the same fluttery look to your lashes as the Benefit icon and it’s so popular, Aldi has had to restock this mascara multiple times to keep up with the demand. For us, it gives the perfect everyday look for your lashes that can be ramped up for the evening.

The post The hidden beauty bargains hiding on Amazon – plus our fave indie beauty brands appeared first on mamabella.

]]>
When it comes to shopping for beauty products online, you might be wary of buying makeup and skincare from traditional brands like L’Oreal, Max Factor, Benefit and more. However, this means you could be missing out on some great beauty bargains and brands hiding in plain sight!

With this in mind, we wanted to shine a spotlight on what may be lesser-known, as well as independent brands that make fantastic products that are really good value for money.

And we’re going to start with a number of Amazon-owned brands that you may not have heard of, but you should definitely consider, before moving on to some of our favourite indie brands that are making waves.

Belei

Is Amazon Belei skincare goodBelei

The Belei skincare range includes a whole host of budget face washes, cleansers, anti-ageing creams, moisturisers, serums and much more.

Our favourite from the Belei range is the Vitamin C Brightening Moisturiser(£9.27). This is because it helps reduce redness and leaves our skin looking glowy and hydrated.

Not only is it suitable for vegans, but it also uses a green alternative to hyaluronic acid. The antioxidant benefits of its Vitamin C ingredient come from the Australian Kakadu lum extract, while Vitamin B3 niacinamide and grapefruit extract all help to reduce the appearance of, and unclog your pores.

The only issue we have with this moisturiser is the smell. Although very faint, it does smell quite medicinal. It’s also probably not a brand you’ll want to use if you have really sensitive skin. Other than that though we think this moisturiser is fantastic, especially for the price.

Another product from the Belei range we really like is the Deep Cleansing Charcoal Mask (£11.48). It’s great at removing dirt from your pores because, as research has shown, activated charcoal draws out bacteria and impurities from the skin. This is why charcoal is a really great ingredient for removing blackheads, soothing acne and shrinking the appearance of your pores.

You’ll want to use this charcoal face mask once or twice a week after cleansing your skin. You’ll also want to follow this up by putting on your moisturiser. Once you’ve spread an even coat over your face you need to wait 10-15 minutes for it to dry and then wash it off.

After using the charcoal mask your skin will feel a lot cleaner and softer. The only thing to be careful of is charcoal can stain, so make sure to be careful when you remove it that it only goes down the sink and not anywhere else.

Shop the Belei range

Find.

Find beauty amazonFind.

Find. is an Amazon makeup brand that offers lip colours, brow pencils and mascaras, eyeshadows, bronzers and makeup brushes. All of its products are great – and have equally great reviews to match – but we particularly like its Chubby lipsticks (£6.83).

Available as part of Find.’s lip kits, these lipsticks have a really smooth and creamy texture. So much so, that they still feel hydrated for a couple or more hours after applying it. In each lip kit, you get two lipsticks, a matte version and a shiny option. And they come in a range of shades from bright pinks to dark reds.

Another thing we love about the Find. brand from Amazon is the pairing of lip colours. A lot of its products come in twos, so for example you can buy lipstick and complementary lip gloss. Or you can buy a lip pencil with matching lipstick, so you don’t have to guess and gamble which ones go together.

Find. also offers a vegan Makeup Setting Spray (£8.49) which works better than many more expensive versions we’ve tried. It’s particularly good at keeping your concealer and foundation in place all day, plus it dries really quickly after you spray it on.

If you have wrinkles under your eyes you know it can be hard to stop your foundation from showing creases. However, using this setting spray on top of your under-eye concealer will help to keep it looking smoother. It also doesn’t feel sticky after it’s on your face, nor does it add a shine to your face that you then have to powder over like others can.

Shop the Find. range

Eono

Eono Beauty AmazonEono

Eono is another great Amazon beauty range that you may have overlooked. It sells fake eyelashes, makeup brushes and tools and makeup bags.

The Eono eyelashes (from £7.59 for 10 pairs) it offers are fantastic value because you get 10 pairs and they’re reusable up to five times – if you clean, and look after them! This means you get a lot of lash for your money. If you like to wear falsies every day then this brand could save you a fortune. You can also buy them in larger quantities for not much more money.

There’s more than one style, so they cover a day or evening look. They’re really lightweight, easy to put on and don’t cost a fortune. What’s not to love?

Our one complaint is that they’re slightly on the longer side. If you’re after a truly natural look, these lashes might not be for you. They’re certainly not the longest lashes on the market, and you could always trim them down, or wear them as half lashes (which involves cutting them in half and only applying on the outer corners of your eyes). It all comes down to personal preference.

Elsewhere, this is one for fans of Dr Pimple Popper. You know how it is when you look in the mirror and you can’t help but squeeze that spot. The only problem is, by using your fingers you risk adding more bacteria to your skin, or worse driving the spot and pus deeper.

Eono sells a little set of blackhead tools (£4.99) that give you the same satisfaction of getting rid of a spot, but in a much more hygienic way that won’t leave any nasties behind. There are detailed photos on the product description link, which outline what tool you need to use for what type of spot you have.

We should caveat this by saying that it’s not advised you get rid of spots yourself, and you should seek expert help. However, if you’re anything like us, you don’t always follow this rule…

One downside is that the box this set of tools comes in is really tough to open, and we mean really tough! It’s a design feature Eono is aware of and will hopefully fix soon.

Shop the Eono range

Indie brands

If you only stick to the big name cosmetic companies you are also missing out on some fantastic indie make-up brands. These niche brands will often offer better value for money and provide a more specific type of makeup to suit you.

An indie brand is a company that is individually owned, rather than owned by a big corporate or parent company. As the above recommendations technically are. Often an indie brand will have been created to try to cover a gap in the market that big corporate brands haven’t fixed.

Here are our favourite indie makeup brands you should definitely take a look at and experiment with.

Mented Cosmetics

Mented CosmeticsMented Cosmetics

After struggling to find the perfect nude lipstick, Amanda and KJ created Mented Cosmetics to provide women with makeup products that are perfectly pig’mented’ to match their skin tone.

This is an indie beauty brand targeted at women of colour, which primarily offers lipsticks, foundations and concealers. Its website offers a shade finder which features a 60-second quiz you can take to find out what shade of foundation and lipstick will suit you best.

When it comes to Mented’s products, we particularly like its semi-matte lipsticks (£13). They’re really silky and don’t dry out quickly. They also don’t transfer to drinking glasses and straws and so on. There’s a selection of nine shades to choose from.

Shop Mented Cosmetics

VE Cosmetics

VE Cosmetics UKVE Cosmetics

If you’re a vegan then you need VE Cosmetics in your life. It’s a totally cruelty-free and vegan indie makeup brand that also refuses to sell its products to countries where animal testing for cosmetics is mandatory (such as China.) What’s more, VE Cosmetics doesn’t use any photo editing on its website, so the colours you see in the photos are the colours you’ll actually get.

As well as being vegan and cruelty-free these eye shadows don’t contain any palm oil. VE Cosmetics really is a UK makeup brand you can trust. The one downside is that it’s not a cheap brand, but then you are paying for quality and sustainability.

With festival season soon to be upon us (hooray!), you’re going to want bright colours with a touch of sparkle. Our favourite VE Cosmetics eyeshadow palette is The Book of Shadows (£28) because it has both matte and shimmer shades in a range of colours.

With these eyeshadows being completely vegan, VE Cosmetics uses dyes that can leave temporary staining on your eyelids. However, this is easily prevented by using a primer or concealer on your eyelids before application, which you’ll probably be doing anyway as a base for your makeup.

This staining is easy to remove with a good oil-based cleanser, too. Check out our cleansing balm guide for recommendations.

Spectrum Collections

Spectrum CollectionsSpectrum Collections

If you’re looking for high-quality makeup brushes you need to look at Spectrum Collections. It’s an award-winning beauty brand, created by Welsh sisters in their garage who wanted to improve makeup brushes, tools and accessories. It’s since grown to be a multi-million-pound company and that’s because of the high quality and effectiveness of its brushes. All of its products are vegan and cruelty-free, too.

The KJH 11-piece Edit Brush Set (£99.99) is a favourite of ours. It was created with makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes, who you may well know from Instagram, and provides every type of makeup brush you need to recreate Katie’s makeup looks.

We love the rose gold colour and that the olive-toned handles are made from sustainable wood. As well as the brushes you get a microfibre brush towel to emulate Katie’s buffing technique.

Spectrum also offers a brush laundrette (£29.99) which we absolutely love! It’s a 100% vegan solid brush soap that comes with a silicone cleaning mat that has a lovely smell. The towel it comes with can be easily hung up or can be folded or rolled with your brushes stored inside.

P.LOUISE

Plouise basesP.Louise

P.LOUISE is a UK brand that has become an absolute cult fave on TikTok, Instagram as well as among celebs, having reportedly travelled across the Atlantic into Kim Kardashian’s makeup bag. It offers all sorts of cosmetics, including subscription boxes that you can buy as one-off purchases called Budget Boxes. Getting one of these means you can try a selection of the brand’s products for a great price.

We particularly love the Rumour Eye base (£5), which is one of its best sellers. Of course, you can use it as an eye shadow primer, but it can also be used for your brows, to brighten up your under eye and as a contour depending on which shade you buy. We’re borderline obsessed with this brand.

Aldi Beauty Box

Aldi Beauty Box Lacura Loves price releaseAldi

In September, Aldi also teased its Aldi Beauty Box – the first-ever beauty box from the high-street supermarket and it contains five of the brand’s most popular products. What’s more, two of them are full-sized – all for the bargain price of £11.99. Sadly it’s only available in-stores.

Inside the Aldi beauty box is:

 • CBD Facial Serum
 • H2O Sleep Mask
 • Healthy Glow Glycolic Tonic
 • Too Legit Mascara
 • Dark Blossom Eau de Parfum

The £3.99 Healthy Glow Glycolic Tonic is a superb cheap skincare alternative for PIXI’s Glow Tonic, which costs £18, while the Too Legit Mascara takes direct aim at Huda Beauty’s LEGIT Lashes mascara.

Meanwhile, the CBD Facial Serum (as its name suggests) uses an ingredient called CBD, which stands for cannabidiol.

Lacura Healthy Glow Glycolic TonerLacura

This chemical comes from a plant called Cannabis sativa, of which there are many strains including marijuana, hemp, Sativa, and Indica.

It’s used for various conditions but in beauty circles, it removes excess sebum and is anti-inflammatory to help with acne. It also helps calm red or irritated skin.

It also slows down the ageing process in the skin. It contains an antioxidant that bonds with free radicals to prevent them causing DNA damage. You can read more in our What is CBD? guide.

There’s a strong chance this Aldi beauty box will sell out quickly – as is the case with many Aldi Lacura products – so the brand has launched a waiting list. At the time of writing, reports are saying that more than 3,000 people have signed up.

“It’s fantastic to see such interest in our first beauty box, particularly with over 3,000 beauty fans signed up to the online waiting list,” said Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi UK.

“The #LacuraLoves box is full of amazing products from the wider Lacura range, and we’ve chosen cult classics like our Too Legit Mascara and Healthy Glow Glycolic Tonic and some of our favourite products from our most recent launches. They perfectly showcase everything we strive to achieve with our Lacura brand – premium quality products that don’t cost a fortune.”

In January last year, Aldi launched its first foray into vegan skincare and then in April it released its first sustainable beauty range. You can read about both here.

1. Editor’s Pick: It Cosmetics’ Heavenly Luxe Complexion Perfection Brush

£36 | Buy now from Cult Beauty

Why we love it: We’re big fans of a double-ended brush because they do more than just one thing. Not only do you not have to chop and change tool, but you save time and money, as well as space in your makeup bag. One of the softest and most gentle foundation brushes on the market that falls into this category is the Heavenly Luxe Complexion Perfection brush from IT Cosmetics.

READ NEXT: How to apply foundation like a pro

Because it’s dual-ended, it can be used for both foundation and concealer, and it’s also great for getting into those hard-to-reach corners of your face and blending out liquid and cream foundations.

It’s a dense brush so you can be sure of even coverage, and this also makes it perfect for applying setting or finishing powders. You can also use it to blend out contour or sweep blusher over your cheeks. However, because of this, it will absorb the product if you use too much (if this happens, read our How to clean your makeup brushes guide).

Elsewhere, this foundation brush is cruelty-free, 100% vegan, and uses synthetic bristles to make sure your application is worry-free.

2. Bargain Buy: Real Techniques Expert Face foundation brush

£7.99 | Buy now from Boots

Why we love it: An OG in the brush world, the Real Techniques Expert Face Brush was one of the brand’s original line up and it’s still one of its best foundation brushes we’ve ever used.

It’s a small, densely packed foundation brush, meaning it’s ideal for packing on a full-coverage liquid or cream foundation. Thanks to its broad shape and firm hold, it also makes application quick and seamless.

We’ve also been known to use this brush for applying bronzer, making it a much cheaper alternative to Charlotte Tilbury’s Air-brush – the Kabuki-style brush released with the makeup artist’s Airbrush Bronzer in May. Plus, this multi-purpose Real Techniques brush comes in at less than a tenner, what more could we ask for?!

The one downside is that the larger brush means it’s not suited for those hard-to-reach areas, in the same way other smaller or dual-ended brushes in this best foundation brush list are.

3. Luxury Buy: Hourglass Vanish Seamless Finish

£42 | Buy now from SpaceNK

Why we love it: Small and mighty, Hourglass’ Seamless Finish brush packs a punch. With a small, angled brush head, it’s easy to combine this beauty with your other liquid products, such as concealer or even your contour. It’s so versatile, it also features in our best makeup brush list. It fits in neatly against your nose and into your eye contours while providing a larger space to work with when on your cheeks or forehead.

The handle – which is short but not travel-sized short – means that you can get a really comfortable grip and solid control of where the product goes. Plus, it fits perfectly inside your makeup bag or even your handbag for a night out.

4. So Eco Stippling Brush

£7.50 | Buy now from Amazon

Why we love it: Having never used a stippling brush before, and having picked up this one from So Eco in one of last year’s best beauty advent calendars, we’re now borderline obsessed with it. If you prefer a more dewy finish to your foundation, or your go-to foundation is a little more on the runny than the thick side, this is the best foundation brush we’ve used.

Not only does it apply foundation effortlessly, giving you an almost flawless base from the get-go, but it also helps you blend and build foundation with ease. It softens the edges and carries the foundation around your face with minimal effort.

This makes it ideal if you end up diluting your foundation with a moisturiser or SPF, but you can also use it for buffing out the edges of thicker, creamier foundations as well as cream blushers and contour.

Plus, all brushes from the So Eco range are beautifully built, using sustainably sourced materials housed in biodegradable packaging. All while being cruelty-free and vegan-friendly.

Buy now from Amazon

5. bareMinerals Beautiful Finish Brush

£26 | Buy now from Amazon

Why we love it: If you’re a powder foundation kind of person, the Beautiful Finish brush from bareMinerals is the ultimate must-have. It’s designed to fit into the brand’s original and matte powder foundation pots, but the skirted silhouette means that the brush picks up enough powder to cover your face and blend out a gorgeous, flawless coverage.

The synthetic bristles are super soft, which means that your skin is left feeling soft and subtle instead of scratched and irritated as other goat-hair brushes can. You can rest assured that with this brush, your powder foundation is going on your face and isn’t being absorbed.

Buy now from Amazon

6. Zoeva 104 buffer brush

£17 | Buy now from Cult Beauty

Why we love it: Used by some of the top names in the industry, Zoeva is among the most trustworthy and reliable brands of makeup brushes – and particularly foundation brushes – available.

With a solid wood handle and vegan-friendly bristles, the Zoeva buffer brush is dense enough to pick up and evenly distribute your foundation without it streaking or caking. You can also use this brush to stipple your foundation before blending it with a damp beauty blender.

Plus, this foundation brush comes in two finishes – black and rose gold – so you can be sure that it’s going to look great on any dressing table.

7. YSL Y foundation brush

£35 | Buy now from Feelunique

YSL

Why we love it: If you’re the type of person who accidentally uses too much foundation and you have to work harder to use up all the ‘waste’ – on even worse the excess goes straight in the bin – this is the best foundation brush for you!

Within the bristles of the brush, you’ll see Yves Saint Laurent has created what it calls a ‘‘Y reservoir’. This is designed to give you customised coverage for a mess-free flawless application as follows:

 • For sheer coverage: Put two drops of foundation into the Y reservoir
 • For medium coverage: Half fill the reservoir with foundation
 • For full coverage: Fill the reservoir to the top with foundation

YSL created this brush to match its Touche Éclat Foundation, but don’t be put off by this because it works just as well with other liquid foundations. If using another foundation, however, bear in mind that the consistency may alter how much you need to put into the reservoir. This may take a little trial and error so the above list is good as a guide, at the very least.

The brush is cruelty-free and has a velvety feel to it hard to believe it’s made from synthetic bristle. And because it’s a flat top brush, it is quick and easy to use to stipple and buff foundation.

It’s up there with the Hourglass Luxury Buy best foundation brush in terms of price, but it’s worth the money and will be cheaper in the long run compared to you constantly replacing your foundation because you waste so much.

8. Sigma F50 foundation brush

£16.75 | Buy now from Beauty Bay

Why we love it: A duo fibre brush, the Sigma F50 offers an airbrushed finish regardless of whichever type of foundation you use.

Liquid products will blend flawlessly without streaking, while powder and mineral foundations are blended evenly. This precise application is also aided by the fact this foundation brush has such a long handle, relatively speaking.

It can be a hero brush for applying a highlighter if you spritz it with some setting spray first.

9. Fenty Full-Body foundation brush

£26 | Buy now from Harvey Nichols

Why we love it: Probably one of the most gorgeous-looking brushes in our best foundation brush list, the Fenty Beauty Full Bodied foundation brush is dense enough to deliver an airbrush finish to your liquid foundation.

The handle is quite long and the head a bit small, but if it’s a quality finish you’re after, and you’re not fussed about taking your time, this is the best foundation brush for you. This can prove particularly useful when trying to pack on setting powder under your eyes, for example.

This brush is made using synthetic bristles too, meaning it’s vegan-friendly and cruelty-free. We’ve explained the difference between vegan and cruelty-free brands in our explainer.

10. NYX Multi-Purpose foundation brush

£14 | Buy now from NYX

Why we love it: This brilliant foundation brush from NYX Professional Makeup – one of our favourite cheap makeup brands – does what it says on the tin.

If you’re after a brush that will apply your foundation as well as your concealer and even your contour, bronzer and blush, this is the best foundation brush around.

It has a gorgeous, sleek, black design that doesn’t look too garish and it’s easy to clean, with either solid cleansers or liquid soaps (read more in our How to clean makeup brushes guide).

It is prone to shedding though and plenty of bristles can get lost in the cleaning process, so go gentle on the cleansing.

Best cheap concealer: Collection Lasting Perfection

£4 | Buy now from Amazon

Why we love it: Don’t be fooled by the low price of this concealer, it is absolutely full to the brim with quality and has won awards because of it. This is why we awarded it the Bargain Buy in our best concealer list.

It’s a sure-favourite with beauty bloggers because of its long-lasting, lightweight finish that covers any blemish with ease. This is helped by its precise applicator, helping you to cover these blemishes on the go, too.

READ NEXT: How to use concealer on mature skin

What’s more, because it gives such decent coverage in spite of its lightweight texture, it’s great for when you need to get rid of dark circles and it’s one of our favourite concealers for mature skin. Learn more about how to apply concealer to mature skin in our guide.

This concealer comes in a wide range of shades – O (extra fair), 1 (fair), 1A (cool fair), 1B (warm fair), 2 (cool medium), 3 (warm medium), 5 (medium deep), 5 (medium deep), 5A (cool deep), 6 (cool dark), 7 (warm dark) – and on the best, or worst, of days it won’t come off with a little sweat.

Best cheap makeup brush: Superdrug Fan Brush

£5.99 | Buy now from Superdrug

Superdrug has established itself as a leader in beauty – both in the partnerships it forges with the likes of up-and-coming brands like Revolution (read more in our best cheap makeup brands roundup) and e.l.f but also with its own range of products in its B. collection.

We particularly love its B. collection of excellent makeup brushes that are well within budget (starting at just £5.99) and they have the added benefit of being entirely vegan, forgoing the use of animal hair.

The Superdrug fan brush is a favourite as it’s soft, lightweight and the perfect shape for a highlight or blush.

It can also be used as an aid for brushing away any excess eyeshadow or removing setting powder from under your eyes after you’ve applied concealer.

This fan brush is our go-to ahead of more expensive makeup brushes from the likes of Morphe and Zoeva. We can’t fault it – and at this price, it’s an absolute bargain. Check out our best makeup brushes list for more options.

Best cheap tinted moisturiser: NYX Professional Makeup Bare With Me

£10 | Buy now from Lookfantastic

NYX

Why we love it: Technically a BB cream, this tinted moisturiser from NYX – one of our favourite cheap makeup brands – is a wonder product for a cheap price.

We do tend to prefer cheap makeup products to be under a tenner where possible, so at £10 for 27ml the NYX Bare With Me tinted moisturiser only just makes the cut, but when you consider how versatile it is, and the fact it’s great for improving your skin tone and texture, it’s at least good value for money.

It’s why we awarded it the Budget Buy in our best tinted moisturiser list.

We’ve used this cheap tinted moisturiser in place of our foundation because it offers good coverage despite its light formulation; we’ve used it as a standalone moisturiser and it’s come in handy as a beauty balm/primer when prepping our skin for makeup.

Because it’s a cheap moisturiser, its texture is thinner than more expensive moisturisers – both standard and tinted – but this does benefit more mature skin like ours and it’s the perfect base for a natural ‘no make-up, make-up’ look.

For such a cheap makeup product, it’s also available in a decent range of 11 shades – from Vanilla Nude to Deep Espresso.

Best cheap BB cream: Garnier Miracle Skin Perfector BB Cream

£9.99 | Buy now from Amazon

Garnier Magic Skin Perfector Best BB creamGarnier

Why we love it: Despite its incredibly low price, Garnier’s Miracle Skin Perfector Daily All-In-One BB Cream regular wins awards from top beauty sites.

It even made Harper’s Bazaar Beauty Hot 100’s Best BB Cream.

Its popularity lies in the fact its formula combines natural-looking colour with sheer coverage.

It also contains ingredients that boost your skin to give you a glow from the inside as well as out.

Using this BB cream every day evens out your skin tone and it provides a light alternative to foundation with a non-greasy consistency that smoothes skin, blurring imperfections.

Best cheap foundation: The Ordinary foundation

£5.90 | Buy now from Lookfantastic

Best foundation from The OrdinaryThe Ordinary

Why we love it: The Ordinary, as a brand, consistently blows us away.

We’ve carried out various blind tests to see how its range of makeup and skincare compares to more expensive rivals and we can’t remember a single time when the premium brand won.

This medium-coverage foundation has become our everyday base because it goes on like a dream and leaves a natural finish.

You only need a small amount to cover your entire face – meaning it’s even better value for money than first thought – and its consistency is such that you can build the coverage up depending on the occasion.

It’s also a rare foundation that you can apply with a brush or a sponge with little difference in results.

It doesn’t settle into creases and fine lines and despite its great coverage, it doesn’t look too heavy or cakey.

On days when we’re going for something a bit more and opt for a thicker foundation, we still add our The Ordinary foundation to the mix.

It has a 21-shade range, although there is a lack of colours for darker skin tones.

Best cheap foundation for dark skin: Black Opal Perfecting Stick

£8.25 | Buy now from Beauty Bay

Black Opal

Why we love it: Black Opal has been pioneering the development of technologically advanced skincare and cosmetics for women of colour for years, long before the likes of Fenty Beauty.

Its launched its first product all the way back in 1994 and it has become a go-to brand for solving issues around hyperpigmentation and oil control, leading the way for cheap makeup brands.

It’s now available in more than 30 countries and specialises in shade matching its products with dark skin tones.

The Black Opal foundation perfecting stick is ideal for people who don’t always want a full face of foundation, but need a little coverage to hide blemishes and so on.

It’s also great for a light touch-and-go during the day at work, or when on holiday. Its size, performance and price make it a handbag staple and the added SPF gives it an extra thumbs up.

You can get more choices in our best foundation for dark skin tones list.

Best cheap setting powder: e.l.f Translucent Mattifying Powder

£4.50 | Buy now from e.l.f

Why we love it: Setting powder can make a world of difference to your overall makeup look.

If you’ve got fine lines and wrinkles around your eyes, it can help your concealer and foundation almost melt into the skin.

It can help blur imperfections, and disguise shine.

The very best setting powder will also help your skin control oil by absorbing sebum throughout the day, all while keeping your makeup in place!

The best cheap setting powder we’ve used, and one that punches well above its low price is e.l.f’s Translucent Mattifying compact.

This Translucent Mattifying Powder will set your makeup and soak up oil like many more expensive powders we’ve used.

It’s a great size to stick in your handbag for when you’re on-the-go, too.

Best cheap mascara: Essence Princess Lash

£3.30 | Buy now from Wilko

Essence

Why we love it: We had to do a double-take at the price of this mascara because it performs amazingly yet costs just £3.30 (when bought from Wilko).

Essence’s Princess Lash Mascara is a fan favourite, which regularly tops Amazon’s most-wished for lists, and it gives your lashes a kind of length and volume we rarely see with expensive mascaras, let alone mascaras this cheap.

It’s why it was awarded the Budget Buy title in our best mascara list.

Its special fibre brush is shaped like a cone, which reminds us of the brush on the Estée Lauder Sumptuous Extreme mascara, but the Estée Lauder version is almost eight times more expensive.

This is a brand that proves that you don’t need to spend a fortune on makeup to look good, and with this mascara giving close to a false-lash effect, you’ll be hard-pressed to find anything better at this price.

Best cheap eyeshadow palette: Sleek I-Divine palette

£8.99 | Buy now from Sleek Makeup

Sleek Makeup I-Divine paletteSleek Makeup

Why we love it: Sleek MakeUP is one of our favourite cheap makeup brands and you can read why – and discover new Sleek products – in our Brand Spotlight

This has largely been fuelled by its fantastic cheap eyeshadow palettes.

Known for its super-pigmented shades and available in a variety of colourways, we’re huge fans of the brand’s I-Divine palettes.

They contain a mix of pearlescent shadows designed to suit every eye colour and skin tone, and are guaranteed to illuminate any eye look.

The browns and copper colours in this particular palette pictured suit blue eyes, the blues brighten brown eyes, the greens enhance hazel eyes and the black and silvery blues are great for grey peepers.

Check out our What eyeshadow goes with your eye colour? article for more information.

Since we included this in our best eyeshadow palettes list, SleekMakeUP has launched a follow-up, Limited Edition i-Divine palette called Chasing the Sun. It’s not quite as versatile as this original, however, it’s beautiful and creates some standout looks.

Best cheap foundation brush: Real Techniques Expert Face foundation brush

£7.99 | Buy now from Superdrug

Why we love it: Real Techniques consistently makes fantastic makeup tools at cheap, affordable prices.

Set up by makeup artists Samantha Chapman and Nicola Haste – also known as Sam & Nic – the brand sells a number of foundation brushes (as well as many other brush and sponge types) but the model that made it onto our best foundation brush list is the Real Techniques Expert Face foundation brush.

It’s a small, densely packed brush that is ideal for picking up and applying full-coverage liquid and cream foundations.

It has a broad shape and is comfortable to hold. It can also double up as a contour brush, or even a powder or highlighter brush. Learn more in our guide to makeup brushes.

It’s incredibly versatile and for less than a tenner, we’re wondering what the catch is!

Best cheap lip liner: Rimmel Moisture Renew

£3.99 | Buy from Superdrug

Why we love it: Using a combination of beeswax and shea butter, this fantastic cheap lip liner from Rimmel provides moisture whereas some liners dry out the lip.

It also defines and protects, stopping lipstick smudging and bleeding.

We love this liner because it’s clear, meaning it can be used with any lipstick and you don’t have to be as precise as with coloured ones.

The downside for the moisturising nature of this liner is that it doesn’t create a matte finish, so would be better suited for use with lip gloss, stains and satin-finish lipsticks.

Best cheap lipstick: NYX Professional Makeup Soft Matte Lip Cream

£6.50 | Buy now from NYX Professional Makeup

NYX lip creamNYX

Why we love it: We love NYX Professional Makeup, it’s one of the best cheap makeup brands around and in almost every category, the affordable makeup brand punches well about its weight, particularly when it comes to lipsticks.

NYX Professional Makeup’s Soft Matte Lip Cream has a creamy, pigmented formula and smells like a dream. It’s also incredibly easy to apply. A cross between a lipstick and a gloss.

Available in more than 30 shades, this cheap lipstick caters to your every need with shades from rich, blue-toned purple, to your everyday muted nudes.

You can read more about this lipstick and some of the other amazing cheap makeup products made by NYX Professional Makeup in our Brand Spotlight article.

Cheap false eyelashes: Eylure Lashes

£5+ | Buy now from Superdrug

Why we love them: Possibly the most well-known brand in the UK for selling false eyelashes, not only are Eylure products affordable and accessible, they’re of the highest quality and come with a glue that will last you up to 18 hours.

These are the best false eyelashes if you’re on a budget. The sacrifices you make are that these eyelashes can only be reused a maximum of five times and the glue that comes with them is a little fiddly to use but for a fiver, these are sacrifices we’re willing to make.

The post How to make cheap homemade cleanser with everyday items appeared first on mamabella.

]]>
Whether you’re self-isolating, meaning you can’t get your favourite beauty products as quickly or easily as normal, or you need to be a little careful with money while things are so up in the air, we’re going to be highlighting ways to make homemade beauty products over the coming weeks. And we’re starting with homemade cleanser

Beyond saving money (you know what huge fans we are of cheap makeup over here!), making homemade cleanser means you can choose ingredients that best suit your exact skincare needs. You also have full control over the products that you’re putting on your face, allowing you to easily and cheaply avoid any contentious chemicals without getting bogged down with labels.

READ NEXT: What is clean beauty?

There are thousands of homemade cleanser recipes so we’ve selected what we consider to be the best for beginners, and which include ingredients that should (hopefully) be easy to get hold of. What’s more, many homemade beauty products use similar ingredients and these ingredients have many other uses beyond beauty. Although it may seem like an initial outlay, if you were going to spend cash on cleanser anyway, you’ll get much for your money doing it this way. As long as people aren’t panic buying olive oil.

Homemade cleanser for sensitive skin

Homemade cleanser is particularly useful for those of us with slightly more sensitive skin as it ensures you’re only using entirely natural products with no sneaky chemicals or agents thrown in. These homemade cleansers are two of the easiest to make and there’s a strong chance you have most of the ingredients already. The first tutorial involves:

 • Milk; full of lactic acid and therefore ideal for cleansing
 • Oats, which gently help remove dead skin cells
 • Honey
 • Lemon juice for extra softening and toning properties

The other recipe requires gram flour, which is ideal for exfoliation and hair growth. The entire Homeveda channel on YouTube uses remedies based on the principles of Ayurveda, which is the ancient Indian science of healing.

Homemade cleanser for acne-prone skin

According to the NHS, 95% of us will have suffered from acne at some point in our early lives, and so often this continues into adulthood. We detail more about the causes, and which ingredients work well at clearing your face in our What is acne? explainer.

READ NEXT: What is acne?

As that article explains, acne can be caused by a mixture of hormones but having a decent skincare routine can make a real difference in either stopping these breakouts in their tracks, or lessening the impact once they break through. With this in mind, our next tutorial recommendation is from iamvanessae.

Her homemade cleanser for acne-prone skin involves:

This cleanser is excellent for those of us with slightly oilier, more acne-prone skin but can be used to balance out most skin conditions. It’s important to note that this particular product has a recommended shelf life of two weeks.

Homemade cleanser for dry skin

The Our Oily House YouTube channel is all about the use of essential oils in creating natural home remedies and products. This tutorial provides homemade cleanser recipes suitable for five different skin types – dry, mature, oily, sensitive and acne-prone.

The homemade cleanser recipe for dry skin involves:

By combining these very simple, very natural products, you’ll have yourself a cleanser that not only soothes and cleans the skin, but also enriches it.

As well as countless more YouTube videos, there are a number of blogs that use natural replacements for shop-bought cleansers. One being DIY Natural which focuses primarily on essential oils, avocado, and rose petals to create homemade cleanser.

READ NEXT: The truth about the acids in your skincare

Obviously we can appreciate not everyone has rose petals in their kitchen or bathroom cupboards (we don’t!) so there is also this post from livesimply that requires honey, olive oil and aloe vera, combined to create a cleanser that is as simple as it is effective.

For more options, and more combinations, we can also recommend Hello Glow which gives eight more detailed suggestions on how to make your own cleansers depending on what outcome you’re hoping to get and what requirements your face has.

If you’re interested in beauty brands that offer natural, ingredient-led products we can highly recommend The Ordinary, Carbon Theory and Boots’ Ingredients range.
