Pinterest has launched the first in its try-before-you-buy series by letting you see exactly how lipsticks will look on your skin tone using your phone’s camera and augmented reality (AR).
The feature, called Try On and powered by AR experts at Lens, is available on Pinterest’s mobile app – but only currently in the US.
If you are in the States, open the Pinterest camera in search, click “Try on” and you’ll be presented with a grid of lipstick shades from leading makeup brands to experiment with. You’ll then be able to buy the lipstick or save it for later.
The makeup partners for this feature include Estée Lauder, Sephora, bareMinerals, Neutrogena, and L’Oreal brands NYX Professional Makeup, YSL Beauté, Lancôme, and Urban Decay. A “try on” button will also appear on select products, as well as in search with related terms such as “matte lipstick” or “red lips”.
Pinterest already has a great skin tone range feature, which launched in 2018, designed to make searching for beauty on Pinterest more inclusive. The feature helps you discover personalised makeup and hair ideas based on your own skin tone.
In a press release announcing the new Try On tool, Pinterest said: “As we focus on building inclusive products, we’ve integrated Try On with our skin tone range feature, so Pinners can see similar lip shades on skin tones that match their own.
“And with Try On, you won’t find skin smoothing or image altering effects that make you look less like you (as you might see on some other AR technologies). We believe in celebrating you, and so our AR won’t be augmenting your reality, but rather helping you to make happy and real purchases for your life.”
Try On for lipstick is available on iOS and Android and will be rolled out globally “in the future”.
