Yes, there is a Black Friday in 2023. The deals started on 1 November and last all month, although the official Black Friday date is 24 November.
The 2023 Black Friday in UK officially starts on Friday 24 November. Cyber Monday 2023 is on 27 November.
It’s called Black Friday because it refers to shops using sales and offers to attract customers in an attempt to get their finances “into the black” before the end of the accounting period.
Whereas it was largely dominated by offline sales, more recently it’s come to represent weeks of online sales across nearly every major retailer, in nearly every sector.
It’s also used by many as the main shopping event where they buy their Christmas gifts.
Notably, the items that are most popular and most likely to be discounted are electronics and toys. Yet these savings extend far beyond into makeup, skincare, beauty tools, accessories, hair dryers, straighteners, and just about any other beauty product you can think of.
Amazon is credited with bringing Black Friday to the UK in 2010 when it launched its annual Black Friday sale on the UK version of its website, at the same time as it went live in the US.
As is the case, where Amazon leads other brands follow and the number of retailers running Black Friday deals in the UK has been growing year-on-year.
As has the length and breadth of the sales.
The concept of Black Friday was introduced to the UK mainly through the influence of American companies and the internet generally. Here are some key factors that contributed to the spread of Black Friday in the UK:
US influence
Companies like Amazon and Walmart (which owns Asda) played a significant role in bringing Black Friday to the UK. Amazon began offering Black Friday deals to its UK customers around 2010, and other retailers followed suit.
Globalisation of Retail
The internet and the rise of global markets meant that retail trends could cross borders more easily than before. This allowed people to take part in shopping events that were once only in specific countries or regions.
Competition
The UK retail market is highly competitive, and retailers are always looking for ways to attract customers, especially in the lead-up to Christmas. Q4 is an important quarter for all businesses and Black Friday sits smack in the middle of it.
Media hype
Media coverage of Black Friday in the US piqued interest in the UK. Stories of shoppers queuing and fighting made it a popular news story, plus it became a lucrative way for websites that earn affiliate money to push deals.
Demand
As UK consumers became aware of the discounts available on Black Friday, demand for similar deals grew. Retailers were keen to meet this demand, further establishing Black Friday as a big event in the UK retail calendar.
No, sadly Black Friday is not a bank holiday!
